Always Sunny Charlie Work

At its core It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is very much an ensemble show, and a very even one at that — it's hard to nail who the 'main' character is simply because there isn't one, and all the main five actors are so damn fantastic that it's rare one of them overpowers the others. But if there is a single actor and character who is the 'breakout' of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the closest would certainly have to be Charlie Day's Charlie Kelly, who is an absolutely brilliant character played by one of the funniest people working today. Well I'm sure the rest of the cast will go on to have great careers, it's really Charlie Day who has already broken big into the mainstream with roles in Horrible Bosses and Pacific Rim. If it wasn't for the fact that he co-runs the show and does it with his best friends, he would have probably jumped ship long ago to focus on his burgeoning movie career. But as 'Charlie Work' proves, it's a damn good thing he's still around.

Always Sunny Charlie Work

Because my god guys, what an episode 'Charlie Work' was. From the get-go I was pretty digging the concept but, as the 22 minutes went on and the situation got more and more elaborate, it became pretty clear that this was going to be a brilliant episode of television. And boy it was — this episode wasn't just merely great. It was incredible, and could end up going into my personal list of It's Always Sunny's all time best episodes. And the fact that an episode worthy of that space can still be made 10 seasons in is nothing short of miraculous.

And look, for as much hyperbole I'm throwing around about it, 'Charlie Work' itself is a pretty straightforward episode of It's Always Sunny. Movie magic mojave. The episode follows Charlie the entire time right through his point of view, as a surprise health inspection threatens to destroy Paddy's (somehow) spotless record. Thus puts Charlie into overdrive mood, as he has to get Paddy's in working condition enough to pass the health inspection being given by a newer, far harsher inspector. His only problem? Literally everyone around him, of course.

Office home and student 2019 review. I recently watched all of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, having heard a lot of good things about it. ITS ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA 10x04 CHARLIE WORK.

But that's the genius of 'Charlie Work' — this episode truly shows how Charlie, despite his idiocy and lack of social grace, is easily the best of The Gang. None of the others characters would certainly be able to pull off such an intricate plan, even if they are trying to convince themselves they can with their newest scheme, a completely hair-brained plot to buy a bunch of airline miles, use said miles to purchase steaks, containment said steaks with chicken feathers, and return said chicken feather steaks to the provider to get a big cash refund. Yeah it was a pretty kooky plan even by It's Always Sunny standards, but it really did bounce off Charlie's health inspector problems quite well. Like magic camera.

It's Always Sunny Charlie Work

And both schemes cumulated amazingly in the later half of the episode, which was just glorious from start to finish. I'm a sucker for long continuous shots personally, but I was totally surprised that It's Always Sunny was willing to commit to such an elaborate bit. I'm almost never taken aback by the filmmaking of the show (it's pretty standard as far as sitcom goes), but man did that sequence slay me. It was gloriously shot and hilarious from start to finish, perfectly utilizing its long take nature to truly show off Charlie's surprising skills and ability to lead. Just a perfect sequence top to bottom and, considering how it was a good ten minute chunk of the episode (or about half), it was pretty damn impressive.

But really, this episode belongs to Charlie and, by extension, Charlie Day. Well the show itself is definitely an ensemble, 'Charlie Work' definitely paints our lovable oaf at the center, giving Charlie Day a perfect spotlight to be hilarious and showing us a different, refreshing shade for the cheese-eating, rat bashing janitor of Paddy's. The episode's conclusion was pitch perfect, as Charlie's bar stool gag (which he mysteriously was building up to throughout the inspection) earned laughs from everybody involved (expect Dee, of course), but the credit for the deed was quickly given to Dennis, almost by default. Charlie pretty much saved Paddy's with his quick thinking and initiative, but of course he doesn't get the respect he deserves from the gang (from their perspective, he's still the same illiterate janitor he's always been.) Yes the gang truly doesn't respect their idiot savant but, after 'Charlie Work,' I certainly do.

  • Stellar cold open, with Charlie walking in on the gang wrangling a bunch of chickens. They really look like a bunch of dunces in this episode but, once again, from Charlie's perspective, they probably are.
  • 'You're doing a chicken and airline points scam TODAY?!'
  • 'Where are your shoes?' 'I lost them in the bathroom.'
  • Dee things the 'joke stool,' which is just a stool with a big nail in it, is hilarious. 'You just don't understand comedy.'
  • 'Must be my shoes.'
  • 'Flushing things gives me control. It's a thing!' I'm almost certain it's not a thing, Frank.
  • 'What happened to the glory hole cover?!'
  • 'This is a chicken and air miles and steak scam now?' 'Yeah.'
  • 'Heeeeey Dennis.'
  • 'Dennis scratched me.'
  • 'LOOK AT ME WHEN YOU'RE TALKING TO ME.' Oh my god, I laughed uproariously at this. This was Charlie Day's episode, but this might be Glenn Howerton's season overall.
  • 'Did you flush your shirt?' 'Yup.'
  • 'Cause I was IRRITATED with you.'
  • Frank, after Charlie quickly put the pieces together for the airline miles-steak-chicken sam: 'Very good, Charlie.'
  • 'DEE YOU BITCH.'
  • 'Allen was let go on account of his leniency.'
  • 'Alright, alright, alright.'
  • Great use of music in the inspection scene, with the drum and cymbal and the like. Very Birdman-esque. Maybe that's why I love this episode so much. Man I love that movie.
  • 'He looked like a turkey burger kind of guy!'
  • 'For the love of god find a shirt, find a shirt Frank!'
  • 'I'm painting a shirt!' Of course that's Franks solution. Of course.
  • 'You move the goddamn dumpster you bitch!' Probably the most Dee has been called a bitch in one episode. I laughed everytime though.
  • 'I should dock you for that one – I'm not gonna!' Charlie Day delivered every single rapid fire line tonight, a pretty impressive accomplishment when you consider how many of them he had.
  • 'Alright alright alright.' I'm going to quote it everytime, because everytime it was hilarious.
  • 'God damn bitch.' Yeah, that too.
  • 'That's how you make a joke stool right there.' Yes it is, Charlie. Yes it freaking is.
